  What is a weighing transducer?

A weighing transducer is an electromechanical sensor used to measure force or weight. It has a simple and effective design, which relies on the well-known transfer between applied forces, material deformations, and currents. They are incredibly versatile devices that provide accurate and powerful performance in a variety of applications. Not surprisingly, they have become a necessity for many industrial and commercial processes, from auto manufacturing to weighing shopping at the checkout. With the development of technology, many exciting new applications continue to emerge, and they will also benefit from the use of load cells. New advances in robotics, haptics, and medical prostheses, to name a few, all require effective methods to measure force and weight.

  Working principle of weighing transducer

When we use a weighing transducer, one end is usually fixed on the frame or base, and the other end can be freely connected to weight or load-bearing components. When force is applied to the body of the load cell, it will bend slightly under strain. This is similar to what happens with a fishing rod when a fisherman catches a fish. He fixed the fishing rod with his hands, and the fish applied force on the other end through the line. The result is that the fishing rod bends.

When this happens, the deformation is very subtle. Since the strain gauge circuit is closely integrated with the weighing transducer, it deforms in unison with the main body. When this happens, the resistance of the circuit will change as the wire stretches. Using signal conditioning electronics, we can generate an output signal proportional to the applied force.
