The Reasoning section of every competitive exam consists of questions from the topic “Logical Arrangement of Words”. This topic is considered very important and every year a large number of questions are asked on this topic. We are providing you with basic concepts and short tricks to solve questions related to the logical arrangement of words in Reasoning which will help you in upcoming SSC and other competitive exams.

    logical arrangement of words

Logical arrangement is the meaningful arrangement of words by natural laws and universally accepted concepts.

Various types of questions are included in this chapter as follows.
The sequence of occurrence of events or different steps in a process
sequence of objects in a class or group
sequence in ascending or descending order
The sequential order of words according to the dictionary

In this type of problem, a sequence has to be formed with a given number of words so that a particular arrangement of words can complete a process or activity logically step by step. In these questions, four/five/six words are given which are related to each other in some way or the other. The candidate should find the appropriate logical arrangement of these words from the given options.

Type 1: The sequence of occurrence of events or different steps in a process

The words given may be those that relate to a particular event or represent different stages of a certain sequential process from beginning to end. A candidate is required to choose from the given options the option that represents the correct logical sequence of the process.

Example 1: Arrange the following words in meaningful order

    1. reading

    2. To create

    3. write

    4. Printing

    (A) 1, 3, 4,2

    (B) 2, 3, 4, 1

    (c) 3, 1, 2, 4

    (d) 3, 2, 4, 1

    Solution: (d)

The given terms represent different stages of the publishing process. First, the thing is written, after that, the written thing is composed. Then this composed material is read out. Hence, the correct order is 3241.

Example 2: Arrange the following words in logical order.

    1. Application

    2. Selection

    3. Exam

    4. Interview

    5. Advertisement

    (A) 1, 2, 3, 5, 4

    (B) 5, 1, 3, 4, 2

    (c) 5, 3, 1, 4, 2

    (d) 4, 5, 1, 2, 3

    Solution: (B)

    for a job,

    Advertisement is the first step
    Application is the second step
    Selection is the last step
The interview is the fourth stage
    exam is the third stage
    Correct order = 5, 1,3, 4, 2

Type 2: Sequence of objects in a class or group (from part to whole)

Sometimes words may be given that belong to a particular class or group. The candidate has to choose from the given options the option that shows the correct logical sequence of objects in a particular class or group. The examples given below will give you a better idea about such words.

    (B) 3, 1, 2, 5, 4

    (c) 3, 1, 4, 2, 5

    (d) 3, 1, 4, 5, 2

    Solution: (A)

The arrangement follows the following logic:

The smallest unit among the five is a member -

a member is a part of the family
A family is a part of a community
A community is a part of a locality
The area is located within a country
    Correct arrangement = 3, 1, 2, 4, 5

    Solution: (c)

Tirupati is a city located in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. India is a part of the world and the world, in turn, is a part of the universe. So, the correct sequence from part to whole is given as – Tirupati Andhra Pradesh India World Universe, and the correct option showing the sequence is (C).

Type 3: Sequence in ascending or descending order

The objects or things represented by the given words can be related to each other based on their properties. The candidate is required to arrange the given words in increasing/decreasing order of their size, age, need, value, intensity, etc.

    Solution: (B)

All the given terms represent substances that can be arranged in increasing order of their cost. The least expensive is sand followed by iron, followed by gold, and diamond and the most expensive is platinum. Therefore, they can be arranged in logical order as 3 2154.
