It was an unusual question coming from a police officer. Heather Brady was napping at home in San Francisco on a Sunday afternoon when the officer knocked on her door to ask: Had she applied to Arizona Western College?

She had not, and as the officer suspected, somebody else had applied to Arizona community colleges in her name to scam the government into paying out financial aid money.

When she checked her student loan servicer account, Brady saw the scammers hadn’t stopped there. A loan for over $9,000 had been paid out in her name - but to another person - for coursework at a California college.

The recent flurry of discussions about AI, cheating and the purpose of education have got me reflecting on Michael Trucano thought-provoking post from 2023 about how artificial intelligence might change the evolution of digital divides in education. Mikes central proposal is this:

1. The first digital divide: The rich have technology, while the poor do not.
2. The second digital divide: The rich have technology and the skills to use it effectively, while the poor have technology but lack skills to use it effectively.
3. The third digital divide: The rich have access to both technology and people to help them use it, while the poor have access to technology only.

When graduate student Dmitrii Tuzov 26 MS heard about an opportunity to learn about decentralized AI (deAI) from experts in the field, and potentially create business-enhancing technology, he couldnt have been more excited.

My first reaction was, Definitely! Thats what I want to do, he says. Now in the early stages of the project, he and four other UConn graduate students are learning technical skills, setting goals, and defining the scope of their work. The deeper I dive, the more I see how big this opportunity is.

Although their work is proprietary, Tuzov thinks it could be a business gamechanger.

More than 100 students and teachers gathered in Loreto College, Mullingar on May 14 for the first VEX IQ Robotics Competition for County Westmeath.

Over the previous few weeks, students from three primary and five post-primary schools in the county built their VEX Robots, in preparation for the competition, which involves schools pairing up to compete in alliances, using their robots to score goals on a playing field.

The VEX Robotics programme aims to encourage students to develop an interest in STEM areas, such as technology, engineering, programming, design and computer science. It also fosters experience in soft skills such as teamwork and communication skills.
