You are about ready to move in, but before you accept the keys from the landlord, you will need to take the time to do a walkthrough of the property with them. Preferably you will do an official one and have paper and pen to take note of the current condition of the apartment. This will protect you and ensure that you will be able to get your security deposit back later.

This walkthrough is a good way to provide some protection for yourself. It allows you and the landlord or property manager to look through the unit, taking notes on any issues that may come up. Make sure to take note of all the potential issues. If you don’t, you may be the one held responsible for them later. If the landlord tries to withhold the deposit from you later, then you can bring up that initial paperwork from before you moved in and use that to your advantage.
