This seems especially true in Jakarta, where I live. More and more folks are calling themselves meat lovers, and you can spot it everywhere—new all-you-can-eat meat buffet places open all the time, and frozen meat packs are just a click away on shopping apps. into whether buffets or online meat sales are pushing the numbers up. Sure, I could, and maybe I will later—who knows? But the thing I keep thinking about every time I pile meat on my plate or walk past a grill station is a pretty simple question: how is meat consumption changing across Indonesia?
I grabbed the meat consumption numbers and the province-level gross regional domestic product (PDRB) stats from the National Bureau of Statistics (BPS). The figures run from 2017 to 2021, which works for me because I can also spot any dips or bumps caused by the pandemic.
As per GMI Research, the Indonesia Meat Market size is USD 17.5 billion in till 2024.
Dataset Overview
I first got the weekly average
Meat consumption for each person, then pulled in the regional gross domestic revenue data as two different files. After that, I merged them together since we need both to see the big picture. I also combined some of the meat categories because BPS lists a bunch of cuts and types, and putting them under a single meat kind makes things simpler.
Meat Consumption by Type
Next, I wanted to see total meat consumption for every regency from 2018 to 2021, broken down by meat type. The idea is to spot how different regions in Indonesia like their meat. I’ll pull out the top 10 regencies that chow down the most meat, sorted by the kind of meat they prefer.
Switching to the kitchen, perkedel is a popular Indonesian fritter you can grab at a food cart or order in a fancy diner. Every family seems to have their favorite twist on the recipe, but the base has potatoes and a little
Ground meat in Indonesia. I usually see folks stick with beef, but I’ve found that a little pork in the mix gives it a nice balance, so that’s what I did here. I also wanted to show how flexible the dish can be, so I cooked it two ways: the classic version with a crispy shell and a simpler one without the breading. You’ll see both in the shots below.
Conclusion and Future Work
Doing this study helped me see how people in Indonesia eat meat. Chicken is the meat everyone eats more than any other kind, and on average people eat the most chicken in Intan Jaya Regency, which is in Papua Province.
