What is a drill pipe?
The drill pipe is a seamless steel pipe, which accounts for about 95% of the length of the drill string. For clarity, the drill string is used to actually drill into the ground to extract resources. The drill pipe is hollow, which allows the drilling fluid to flow freely throughout the drill pipe, thus smoothly completing the pumping process.
The drill pipe is manufactured to transmit drilling torque to the entire length of the drill pipe—usually a few miles. They can also resist pressure changes and need to be able to withstand the full weight of deeper drilling components. The drill pipe is manufactured by welding threaded drill tool joints, box drill tool joints and pin drill tool joints together. These joints are used on the top of the drill string to pump fluid and transfer torque to the drill bit.
How to measure the size of drill pipe?
Each joint of the drill pipe is called a "single joint". Then further identify "singles" by their length. Specifically, the length is identified using the three-part API length range, so the length will be classified as one, two, or three. The most common length of drill pipe is range two. This is important because you need to accurately consider the length of the drill string (including the drill pipe) when determining the drilling depth.
Drill rods are manufactured in a variety of sizes and materials, which means there is a perfect drill rod for your project. Similar to the API length range, there are also API grade groupings based on drill pipe size and material. The API level measures yield strength, tensile strength, drill pipe body and drill pipe joints.
API grades are given based on inspections, which are especially important after the use of Water Well Drilling Tools. Ultrasonic testing and various other tools are used to provide these measurement ranges.
