The new report by Procurement Resource, a global procurement research, and consulting firm, looks in-depth into the costs involved in the production of acetic acid. The comprehensive report analyses the production cost of the material, covering the raw material costs and co-product credit, equipment costs, land and site costs, labour wages, maintenance costs, financing charges, and depreciation costs. The extensive study describes the stepwise consumption of material and utilities along with a detailed process flow diagram. The report also assesses the latest developments within the industry that might influence the acetic acid production cost, looking into capacity expansions, plant turnarounds, mergers, acquisitions, and investments.
Acetic acid has two carbons and is a monocarboxylic acid. It is a clear, colourless liquid with a harsh, vinegar-like odour. Carbonylation of methanol, oxidation of acetaldehyde and ethylene, and biological methods such as bacterial fermentation can all be used to produce acetic acid.
The weakening automobile sector, along with the temporary stoppage of car production units and numerous building projects as a result of the lingering uncertainty around pandemic rules, reduced the use of adhesives, paints, and coatings, lowering demand for acetic acid. Most end-user industries, such as textiles, food and beverage, automotive, and construction, were impacted by work stoppages as a result of measures imposed by various government authorities across the globe in an effort to decelerate the increase of the virus and workforce scarcities owing to disease and precautionary quarantines. These factors are expected to impact the production cost of acetic acid.
The production cost report by Procurement Resource assesses the production of acetic acid through methanol, acetaldehyde, ethylene, and butane. In the production process of acetic acid via carbonylation of methanol carbon monoxide is used as a source of the carbonyl group. When catalysed by rhodium, the process is known as the Monsanto process. Likewise, catalysed by iridium, it is known as the Cativa process which is quite green and highly efficient. A catalytic amount of water is used in both processes. The largest manufacturer of acetic acid in India, Gujrat Narmada Valley Fertilizers and Chemicals use this method for production. Similarly, in the production process of acetic acid via oxidation of acetaldehyde using a metal catalyst, such as the naphthenate salts of manganese, cobalt, and chromium, and air as an oxygen source. The reaction is very economic as its yield exceeds 95% with the right catalyst.
By-products are ethyl acetate, formic acid, and formaldehyde, which are readily separated by distillation. Also, in the production process of acetic acid via oxidation of ethylene by using a palladium metal catalyst supported on a heteropoly acid such as silicotungstic acid and use of UV light for production of acetic acid at ambient temperatures and pressure making it greener and energy-efficient. This method was developed by the Showa Denko company in their plant situated in Oita, Japan. Equally, the production process of acetic acid via butane involves butane being oxidised using air as an oxygen source in the presence of metal catalysts. First, peroxides are produced in the reaction which further decomposes to generate acetic acid. By-products include butanone, ethyl acetate, formic acid, and propionic acid. Although commercially valuable, the separation of these by-products from acetic acid adds to the cost of production.
