Strategies for Optimizing Changeovers in the Manufacturing Industry

In manufacturing, most facilities produce more than one product. A factory may produce multiple versions of a particular product, it may produce multiple different products from the same line of products, or it may produce multiple different products that are completely separate from one another.

In any case, the process of changing from one product to another is referred to as a changeover. The changeover process takes place when switching from one batch of products to a different batch of dissimilar products. It may involve changing out tools on manufacturing machines as well as reprogramming robotic equipment to operate differently according to the needs of the new process. Workers may also need to learn new operating procedures or receive training specific to new equipment used in the manufacturing process.

Why Reducing Changeover Time is Important

Most manufacturers strive to reduce changeover time because changeover time cuts into productivity. Some changeover processes are more complicated than others, but when changeover takes days or weeks to re-tool equipment, this is time wasted that could be used to produce units. Likewise, the time it takes to bring workers up to speed on new procedures eats into productivity as well. If you need software to reduce changeover time, visit this website.

Plan Ahead

Before a changeover takes place, it’s a good idea to plan out everything from die-changing procedures to software updates. If training is required for workers to utilize new systems or equipment, now is the time to provide this training as opposed to waiting until the changeover has taken place. Planning can help you reduce changeover time and maximize productivity once the process is complete.

Repurpose Existing Tools

You may be able to repurpose existing tools to speed along the changeover process and get everything up and running once the changeover has been completed. Look for dies that can be converted to match new standards rather than waiting on new dies to be cast. This may not always be possible since many tools are customized for specific uses, but if you can find ways to utilize existing tools, you may be able to improve changeover times while increasing productivity.
