Although watches have been used as practical timepieces since at least the latter part of the 1800s, they have also been considered fashion accessories for just about as long. These days, many people consider watches to be essential accents to complete the look of outfits from professional attire to casual wear.

Watches as fashion accessories took off in the 1910s as manufacturing technology made it easier to mass produce timepieces. By the time the 1920s rolled around, wristwatch design and detail began to get more sophisticated and complex.

How War Changed the Landscape of Fashion Timepieces

When World War 2 began, fashion watches evolved to be more practical. Large faces and easy-to-read dials became essential design elements in watches of the period. Timepieces like the Rolex 114060 came along shortly after to echo these design choices.

The Rolex 114060 Submariner was designed in the early 1950s and included tools for divers and people working in tough conditions. This move by Rolex spawned a legion of followers in the watch manufacturing industry, as timepieces began to be seen as a necessity for professionals in all industries. The Digital Age

By the time the 1970s came around, watchmakers had already begun investigating the potential of digital technology in timekeeping. The result of this interest spurred the development of many digital wristwatches in the 1980s and 1990s, and watch designs began to get more colorful.

Additionally, cheaper materials and manufacturing processes allowed for fashion watches to be constructed out of polymer materials that could be shaped and molded into new types of designs. Watch face design transitioned from elaborate numeral scripting to all-digital readouts.

Watch Fashion Today

These days, the smartwatch has taken over as the must-have fashion accessory. Smartwatches include many features found in smartphones, including the ability to make and receive calls and send and receive text messages. Part of the popularity of the smartwatch comes from the fact that faceplates can be switched out digitally as often as a wearer would like, opening the door to virtually unlimited customization options.
