About The Error Of Electronic Weighing Scale

Notes on electronic body fat scale:

1) Each scale has an allowable error tolerance. If you're looking for a new scale and accuracy is extremely important to you, be sure to research the allowable error tolerances for your brand of choice. There is no industry standard for bathroom scales, and brands do vary in the amount of error they consider acceptable.

For example some Bluetooth bathroom scales allow +/- 0.66lbs to 110lbs, +/- 0.88lbs from 110lbs to 220lbs, and +/- 1.1lbs from 220lbs to 330lbs. This means that if you weigh 200 lbs, your real weight could be between 199.2 lbs and 200.88 lbs, which is pretty accurate. Brands of other sizes may allow a wider margin of error.

2) The age of your digital scale may not affect its accuracy. The BMC Public Health research project, "Accuracy and Consistency of Weights Provided by Home Bathroom Scales," studied the accuracy of 67 scales and found that the age of digital scales had no significant effect on their accuracy. So, just because your scale is older, doesn't necessarily mean you need a new one. It's probably still running fine unless it's been jumped on, dropped, or mishandled.

3) All digital scales are fairly accurate, no matter the brand. If you just want to log your weight, you don't need to buy the most expensive scale on the market.

Of course, more expensive brands tend to be more accurate, and often have additional features (i.e. Bluetooth, body fat measurement, etc.). However, of the 10 scales we tested in the office, it had the worst reading, losing just 1.8 pounds at 110 pounds, which isn't a significant figure for bathroom scale use.

Xiangshan Zhengtai Electrical Appliance Co., Ltd. is a digital scale supplier and mechanical scale manufacturer from China. The company designs, processes and sells electronic kitchen scalesmechanical bathroom scales, and other electronic scale products.
