Traditionally, parole chanson francaise poetry was meant to be sung. However, as the printing press became popular, performed poetry took a back seat to written works. The most common form of lyric poetry is called a sonnet. It is written in fourteen lines, using iambic pentameter. The sonnet has a positive lyrical quality and is a type of poetry about love. In addition to iambic pentameter, a sonnet often uses a metric foot, which is a unit of measurement. The most common metric feet in lyric poetry are iambs, troches, and pyrrhic feet.
Some other literary devices commonly used in lyrics are metaphors, which help readers understand complex ideas. These can be particularly useful in lyric poetry. Alicia Keys, for example, uses the image of flames to convey the concept of warmth.
