Runewords are the best way of upgrading your items in Diablo 2. Combining the right rune with the correct item can grant you a massive spike in power, making you a force to be reckoned with. In order to form Runewords, you’ll first need the key component: runes. These can be combined together with gems to create more powerful and complex runes, or left alone if you’re looking to slot them in and create a Runeword and D2R Ladder Items

There are a few requisites for using Runewords, though:Items must be gray text items – normal, exceptional, or Elite. Low Quality, Superior, and Ethereal can be used.

The item must be of the correct type – trying to slot weapon runes into a piece of armor isn’t going to get you anywhere.

The item must have the correct amount of slots – there cannot be any leftover. For example, if you try to slot a two rune Runeword into an item with three slots, nothing will happen.

Runes must be socketed in the correct order – Think of it as literally writing a word, you can’t jumble up the letters. Runes socket in the order 1, 2, 3, so you can’t place them wherever you want them.

How to Make Runewords

In Diablo 2: Resurrected, your character’s equipment is very crucial. The progress and success of your character is pretty much dependant on how you’ll be arming your character’s builds.

A good set of abilities and weapons will ensure you consistent wins during the battles and also a hindrance-free progression throughout different levels. Moreover, as you win boss fights and get rid of small enemies, you’ll obtain more Runes.

To achieve this, you’ll have to improve your weapons by making Runewords.

In order to do this, you’ll basically have to combine runes with your weapons and it’ll form a word. Based on whatever word is created, the weapon will receive a modification that’ll boost the weapon’s performance.

The concept of Runes is similar to gems. You’ll basically have to collect Runes and then find sockets that’ll accept them. You’ll find different levels of Runes throughout the game and they’ll be used to craft powerful weapons.

It is important to know that you can’t take out Runes from weapons once they’ve been combined. So as soon as you get one, be critical about the combination you’re about to create and how it will benefit you

How to Use Runewords in Diablo 2: Resurrected

Before applying Runewords to your gear, you’ll need to gather them. For example, crafting the Runeword Ancient’s Pledge requires you to place the Runes Ral, Ort, and Tal into a Shield with three sockets. Once done, the Runeword will activate and grant a powerful effect. Not all Runewords are equally powerful, so look for those with more potent effects.

The most important thing to remember about Runewords is to place the Runes in the correct order to activate them. Additionally, you must set the Runes into the specific item or items that it supports, and you must choose an item with the number of sockets you need. So, while Ancient’s Pledge can be used in shields with three sockets, making the Runeword Beast requires an axe, a scepter, or a hammer with five sockets. You’d then need to play the runes Ber, Tir, Um, Mal, and Lum into the item in that exact order to activate the Runeword.

You won’t be able to use Runewords meant for Body armor in anything but items worn on your torso. Likewise, Runewords that require melee weapons won’t be useable in orbs or ranged weapons of any kind. Also, be mindful of names. Just because the item says axe (or something similar) in the name doesn’t make it an axe. Make sure the item type matches the kind of Runeword you are trying to create.

If you take note of the supported item types and set the Runes out in the correct order before socketing them, it should help make the process much easier to follow.

In the base Diablo 2, end-game builds revolved around certain unique weapons and armor. Runewords gave players something else to farm for, not only the runes themselves but the perfect pieces in which to fit them. The most coveted runes can also be used as currency in trading for the best items.
