The Transformative Power of Yoga

Body

Yoga is a discipline with roots in ancient India that aims to improve one's well-being on several levels. The Sanskrit term yoga means "to unite" or "yoke," and it comes from the root yuj, more explained in Vents Magazine. The three primary components of yoga are asana (posture), pranayama (breathing technique), and dhyana (meditation).

Despite common misconceptions, yoga is not about forcing your body into unnatural poses; in fact, the Sanskrit word for yoga postures, "asana," literally translates to "posture comfortably held."

Regular yoga practice has been linked to better cardiovascular health, less stress, and increased flexibility and strength.

Beyond-the-mat benefits

Stress and anxiety may be alleviated via exercise, and practices like Yoga are particularly effective since they both reduce mental and bodily strain. Breathing exercises, deep stretching, and tensing up muscles all contribute to a state of relaxation. Light yoga, even for only 10 minutes, has tremendous benefits for health and well-being.

In fact, yoga has been shown to help lower stress hormone cortisol and promote positive feelings and calmness. Taking care of oneself by setting aside time every day is a great way to deal with stress.

According to the British Heart Foundation, daily yoga practice may be an effective method of stress management for those with heart conditions.

Sitting Yoga

Try some chair yoga if you spend a lot of time sitting at your desk at home or at the workplace. It's a great way to get some physical activity and stretching in on a daily basis. If you have five minutes to spare, why not try it out?
