Is AI Exacerbating the Third Digital Divide in EduTech?
The recent flurry of discussions about AI, cheating and the purpose of education have got me reflecting on Michael Trucano thought-provoking post from 2023 about how artificial intelligence might change the evolution of digital divides in education. Mikes central proposal is this:
1. The first digital divide: The rich have technology, while the poor do not.
2. The second digital divide: The rich have technology and the skills to use it effectively, while the poor have technology but lack skills to use it effectively.
3. The third digital divide: The rich have access to both technology and people to help them use it, while the poor have access to technology only.
I fully agree with his take on the third divide - but is there more to consider two years later? Below are some personal thinking out loud observations. Please share your reactions and any research to strengthen, refute or add to the points.

Students reliance on AI for schoolwork worries educators
The question of whether students should formally adopt artificial intelligence in their studies is becoming more pressing as usage skyrockets globally. While many students report benefits such as enhanced efficiency and improved academic performance, educators and experts are sounding the alarm over inadequate institutional support, over-reliance, and long-term risks to learning quality.
A global report by the Digital Education Council, which surveyed 3,839 students across 16 countries, revealed that 86 per cent of students use AI tools to support their studies, with 24 per cent using them daily.
ChatGPT was named the most popular tool, used by 66 per cent of respondents. On average, students reported using 2.1 different AI platforms.
